The friendly face of the Internet numbering system.

Every device connected to the Internet has a unique number. Whether it's your computer connected to the Internet by a modem or broadband, in which case you usually 'borrow' a number from your ISP whilst you are connected, or a web server like this one - they're all assigned a unique number. The maximum value for the number is 4,294,967,295 and we're running short!

The Domain Name System maintains a database of the IP addresses of devices on the Internet. This allows a program, such as a browser, to lookup a host's IP address when you enter a more memorable URL in to your browser.
